BAM! It’s a Picture Book: The Art Behind Graphic Novels @ Art Museum of South Texas
Apr 21 @ 10:00 am – Jun 25 @ 5:00 pm

This art exhibition features today’s leading and best graphic artists of the illustration world. Graphic novels have gained immense popularity in recent years to a diverse, expanded audience. According to the American Library Association, they are among the fastest growing categories in publishing and bookselling. The cave paintings of ages past and hieroglyphics of ancient Egypt were the first examples of storytelling through pictures. Over the years the graphic novel has emerged as a financially successful medium combining storytelling and fine art and evolved into the popular DC Comic heroes we recognize today: Superman, Batman, and Marvel Comic’s Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, and X-Men.

The Outwin 2016: American Portraiture Today @ The Art Museum of South Texas (AMST)
Jun 2 – Sep 10 all-day

This exhibition was organized by the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery. The competition and exhibition have been made possible by generous support from the Virginia Outwin Boochover Portrait Competition Endowment.
Every three years, the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery invites artists across America to present the art of portraiture through its Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition. Established in 2006, it is the premiere national juried competition to celebrate excellence and innovation in portraiture. Drawing submissions from emerging, midcareer, and established artists, the competition has accelerated the careers of participants and included acclaimed artists such as Bo Bartlett, Philip Grausman, Beverly McIver, Tina Mion, Burton Silverman, and Ginny Stanford. This exhibition features 43 artists and will only be shown at four U.S. museums.
